Family Time Devotions: A Week Through God Creating Man And Woman

Monday

In God’s Word

Genesis 2:4b-7 (NIrV)

The Lord God made the earth and the heavens. At that time, bushes had not appeared on the earth. Plants had not come up in the fields. The Lord God had not sent rain on the earth. And there wasn’t any man to work the ground. But streams came up from the earth. They watered the whole surface of the ground.

Then the Lord God formed a man. He made him out of the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into him. And the man became a living person.

God created the world in sixth days, and after God had created the world, He said “It was Good.” And of all the creation, one part of creation was extra special, humankind.

Everything was created out of nothing, but humankind was first created by God’s hand from His creation and breathed His life into us to make us alive.

No other creation can claim that to be true.

Questions:

  • How did God create man?
  • How does that make you different than other creatures?

Sticky Note:

  • Remember you are a special creation, but so is everyone in your school. (Genesis 2:7)

Prayer For The Family:

I pray that my family know that everyone is a special creation. I pray that we all will treat everyone we encounter as a special creation.

Tuesday

In God’s Word

Genesis 2:8 & 16-17 (NIrV)

The Lord God had planted a garden in the east. It was in Eden. There he put the man he had formed.

The Lord God gave the man a command. He said, “You can eat the fruit of any tree that is in the garden. But you must not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you do, you can be sure that you will die.”

God provided man a place to live and plenty of resources to live off. They could eat from any of the trees in the garden, except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Only one restriction out of a plentiful amount of fruit and veggies.

Questions:

  • Is there anything in the house that you cannot touch? Why can’t you touch it?
  • How did God provide for Adam and Eve?
  • What are some things that God provides for you?

Sticky Note:

  • Remember today all the things God has provided for you. (Gen 2:16)

Prayer For The Family:

I pray my for family today to know all the great things You have provided for us. Help us all be grateful.

Wednesday

In God’s Word

Genesis 2:9-15 (NIrV)

The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground. Their fruit was pleasing to look at and good to eat.

The tree that gives life forever was in the middle of the garden. The tree that gives the ability to tell the difference between good and evil was also there. A river watered the garden. It flowed from Eden. From there it separated into four other rivers. The name of the first river is the Pishon. It winds through the whole land of Havilah. Gold is found there. The gold of that land is good. Onyx and sweet-smelling resin are also found there. The name of the second river is the Gihon. It winds through the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris. It runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

The Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden. He put him there to work its ground and to take care of it.

Man was different from the other animals. And because we are created in God’s image, He gave us the responsibility to take care of the world and it’s creatures. This responsibility is something that we shouldn’t take lightly because it’s not just for Adam and Eve, but for us as well. We are to make sure this world continues to live on and take care of it by not draining all of it’s resources.

Questions:

  • What are some things you can do to take care of this world?

Sticky Note:

  • Make sure not to waste any of your food or throw your trash on the ground Gen. 2:15

Prayer For The Family:

I pray that my family looks at your creation as a great responsibility and not to waste the resources we have been provided with.

Thursday

In God’s Word

Genesis 2:18-23 (NIrV)

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”

The Lord God had formed all of the wild animals. He had also formed all of the birds of the air. He had made all of them out of the ground. He brought them to the man to see what names he would give them. And the name the man gave each living creature became its name.

So the man gave names to all of the livestock. He gave names to all of the birds of the air. And he gave names to all of the wild animals.

But Adam didn’t find a helper that was right for him. So the Lord God caused him to fall into a deep sleep. While the man was sleeping, the Lord God took out one of his ribs. He closed up the opening that was in his side.

Then the Lord God made a woman. He made her from the rib he had taken out of the man. And he brought her to him.

The man said,“Her bones have come from my bones. Her body has come from my body. She will be named ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of a man.”

There is only one thing that God created that wasn’t good, and that was when man was alone. There was nothing in this world that was perfect for Adam. So God created Eve, to be a companion so man wouldn’t be left alone.

Just like the creation of Adam, Eve’s creation story was also unique as well. She was created not from the ground like Adam but from his body. Weird but cool.

Questions:

  • Why did God create another person?
  • What does this part of the story tell us about God?

Sticky Note:

  • Just like God, I will always be with you. You are never alone. (Gen 2:18)

Prayer For The Family:

Lord help me see the needs of my family before they tell me. Help me always be with them so they never feel alone.

Friday

In God’s Word

Ephesians 2:10 (NIrV)

God made us. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. Now we can do good things. Long ago God prepared them for us to do.

God made us differently than any of His creation. And because of that, we are called to be different as well. God created us the ability to choose what is right and what is wrong. He created us the ability to act not on instinct but intelligently.

And because of that, we are created to do good things.

Question:

  • What are some good things that we can choose to do?
  • What is the best choice that we can make to have everlasting life?

Sticky Note:

  • God gave you a brain to use for good things. (Eph. 2:10)

Prayer For Your Family:

I pray that my children know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. I pray that they will be wise in their choices, not to be good, but to be like You!

Extra Weekend:

Get out a mirror and have your child look at your and themselves in the mirror.

Ask: What are something that similar? Different? Ask: What does it mean to be created in God’s image?

Say: We could never be close to being like God. We can’t be as powerful as Him. As loving as Him. As forgiving as Him. But, we can strive to be like God, because we are created in His image.

**If you have an inkpad**

Get out a stamp pad and a picture of an animal, which you can find plenty at crayola.com.  Have them color in the picture with their fingerprints from the ink pad. You can also have them make a petal flower with their fingerprint on blank piece of paper and then use crayons to make the stem.

Say: God’s imprint is on everything in this world. Just like your fingerprint is all over this animal.
